The Whitsunday Regional Council Australia Day Awards celebrate the achievement and contribution of individuals and organisations in our region.

These awards are an opportunity to publicly acknowledge those who have made an extraordinary contribution or is an outstanding achiever.

If you know of a person of community group dedicated to making the Whitsunday region a better place, help us recognise their efforts and nominate them for a 2022 Whitsunday Regional Council Australia Day Award.

Award Categories


Citizen of the Year - Recognising those who have made a noteworthy contribution to the betterment of the Whitsunday Region and/or given outstanding service to the local community for the past 12 months or over a number of years. Age Requirement: 26 years or older as at 26 January 2022.

Young Citizen of the Year - Recognising those who have made a noteworthy contribution to the betterment of the Whitsunday Region and/or given outstanding service to the local community. Age Requirement: 16 - 25 years as at 26 January 2022.

Senior Sports Award - Recognising the dedicated sportsperson, coach, administrator, official or volunteer whose actions inspire and encourage others to be part of a chosen sport. Age Requirement: 26 years or older as at 26 January 2022.

Young Sports Award - Recognising the dedicated sportsperson, coach, administrator, official or volunteer whose actions inspire and encourage others to be part of a chosen sport. Age Requirement: 16 - 25 years as at 26 January 2022.

Arts & Cultural Award - Recognising individuals or groups involved in the Region's rich cultural and arts community. No age requirement.

Environmental Achievement Award - Recognising individuals or groups who demonstrate a genuine passion for the environment and strive to improve it through conservation, preservation, protection and education. No age requirement.

Community Event of the Year - Recognising individuals, informal groups or formal organisations who have made a significant and beneficial contribution to the wellbeing or liveability of the Whitsunday Region through projects, activities or events in the past 12 months. No age requirement.

Volunteer of the Year Award - Recognising those who have made a noteworthy contribution as a volunteer in the Whitsunday region. No age requirement.

    Conditions of Entry

    1. Nominees must be a resident of the Whitsunday Region at the time of the nomination.

    2. Nominations will not be accepted if the individual or group has won an award the previous year.

    3. All nominations must be received on the official nomination form. Additional information can be supplied.

    4. Contact details of nominators may be forwarded on to local media.

    5. Citizen of the Year nominees must be over 26 years of age as at January 26, 2022.

    6. Young Citizen of the Year nominees must be aged 16-25 years as at January 26, 2022.

    7. A person who is deemed to have acted in a manner contrary to Council values will not be eligible.
