Bicentennial Boardwalk Upgrade - Stage 3
Whitsunday Regional Council is delivering the final stage of the Bicentennial Boardwalk — a key upgrade project to enhance connectivity and safety along the Airlie Beach foreshore.
This stage will complete the boardwalk link between the Airlie Beach Lagoon and Coral Sea Resort, widening sections of the boardwalk and adjacent concrete footpath by up to one metre. The upgrade will improve capacity and reduce conflicts between pedestrians, cyclists and scooters, while replacing the existing timber decking with a durable composite fibre material to extend the life of the asset.
Construction is scheduled to commence from Monday 27 April 2026, with completion expected by late June 2026, weather permitting. View our fact sheet for more information.
Construction at a Glance
The boardwalk section between the Airlie Beach Lagoon and Coral Sea Resort will be closed for approximately seven weeks during construction, with a signed pedestrian detour in place via Mazlin Street and Ocean View Avenue.
Work hours will generally occur between 7am and 6pm, Monday to Friday, with some earlier starts required for concrete pours. Residents and visitors may notice increased construction activity, including heavy vehicle movements and temporary changes to traffic and parking conditions.
Temporary reductions in parking will occur within the Broadwater Avenue car park to allow for construction access and materials, with parking progressively reinstated as works are completed.
Community Access
During construction, pedestrian access along the boardwalk will be temporarily redirected via a signed detour route along Mazlin, Hillcrest and Ocean View Avenue, ensuring continued connectivity between the Lagoon and Coral Sea Resort.
Pedestrians, cyclists and motorists are asked to take care around the work zone, follow all signage and directions from traffic controllers, and allow extra time when travelling through the area.
Access to surrounding businesses and facilities will remain available, with works staged to minimise disruption where possible.
