Thank you for your interest. Consultation has concluded.

We recently asked for your feedback on the location of a semi-permanent movie screen at the Airlie Beach Foreshore, as part of the Works for Queensland funding program.

The Queensland Department of Resources have been advised of the consultation process, and has confirmed the installation of the semi-permanent screen and its proposed management is consistent with the permitted use of the land.

Construction of the concrete pad will begin soon and the movie screen is expected to be installed by the end of September 2021, weather permitting.

Key Results

In total, we received 159 submissions and 60% of participants support the proposal.

How Will it Work?

The 5.5m x 3m LED screen will be housed in a shipping container next to the new sound stage at the Airlie Beach Foreshore. The structure will be painted by a local artist to be visually appealing.

As the Airlie Beach Foreshore is classified as a public recreational reserve under the Airlie Beach Land Management Plan, any proposed use of the screen would need to meet the guidelines for acceptable use in a recreational area.

The retractable screen can be raised to a height of approximately 20ft from the ground to show free G-rated movies or other non-commercial recreational entertainment which meets our guidelines for suitable viewing.

The screen offers a wide range of opportunities for community events and activities on the Foreshore, such as regular free family movie nights in the park.

There are also opportunities for community organisations to make use of the screen, if the event is free and the content abides by WRC’s strict guidelines of G rated entertainment only, in public spaces.

When not in use, the screen retracts into the container and if required, the entire structure can be moved by crane and truck to another location. We are proposing for a mural to be painted on the shipping container, by a local artist, to ensure the structure is visually appealing.

There is also the option for WRC to play other regular free entertainment on the screen, such as sport or children's programs.
