Whitsunday Regional Council is redeveloping the existing Cannonvale Skatepark on the Cannonvale Foreshore.

The existing skatepark is showing signs of wear and is an older design that doesn't meet current skating trends. The existing facility will be demolished and replaced with a new skatepark in the same spot during 2022.

A draft Design was prepared and presented to the public for feedback. A range of ideas and suggestions were put forward by local skaters and residents, which have been considered during the final design of the skatepark. The feedback and updated Concept was presented to the Council in January 2022.

The main changes include minor changes to the original layout as Stage One and adding a competition skatebowl into the design as Stage Two. We will now progress with construction of Stage One and seek funding for Stage Two.

Works have now commenced on the new design, with completion expected mid December 2023.

I think the concept is good however it needs some tweaking. The quarter pipe at the bottom setting you up for the middle section looks quite big so going to get too much speed (move the middle section up). Long quarter on right side will see people cutting across the park to hit it.
The half pipe should be extended to be a half bowl to create better flow.
It would be great to see a small kidney shaped bowl incorporated as that creates another zone for everyone to use and the closest bowl is at Proserpine.
The garden on the left will get demolished real quick with people falling in it. Instead make it a big T step ledge that runs as a barrier between park and court. People can then use this to sit and watch the skatepark or basketball courts.
Some lights would be amazing as well (9pm turn off)
This has been needing to be done for a long time now and anything that replaces it is going to a great upgrade!

This is a a great idea. Our Youth is not a low priority and the skate park is definitely in need of an upgrade, as the bowl is too steep for the length of it. Therefore it never gets used as much as it would. Even little kids on their scooters aren’t able to use the facility.

The basketball courts do have very limited seating and hardly any shade for spectators with infants that want to keep away from the skating area. I feel this should be an idea to think of for the future as no doubt it will eventually it be expanded to include a playground.

It’s a fantastic area, in a great location right by the school and police station.

I don't support this proposal at all. It is of a low priority and there is no reason the existing facility can't be resurfaced and minor improvements made. It isn't very well used even when it met current skating trends. I think if users want upgrades to it they should fund raise themselves. Council should dispose of the facility to a volunteer group.

There needs to be a technical section for the kids who want to be away from little kids and use skills.
It would be really nice if teens were provided an opportunity to submit a design plan. Promote it through schools and social media.
This design looks pretty, but will be another facility that teens can't use due to too many little ones on scooters...

I see a lot of ppl saying it needs to be bigger. I will leave the design details up to the experts.

I will put my opinion to this.
It needs car parking (not just dirt), a toilet block , drinking water taps, shaded seating areas for parents and a couple of Bbq's

This is a great area and could be used for so many family outings, birthday partys and more. Please utilise the area to its fullest.

I loved the idea of a flat surface on the basketball court so it can be used for skating too.

Hope this helps

There is no point in building this design. Part of the skatepark is almost identical to the PCYC it has the same half pipe design with a hip to another quarter except the other one is bigger. Jubilee pocket has different sized quarters more obstacles and more space no one outside of airlie beach would want to go to this skatepark or even drive from jubilee pocket to this skatepark since this is definitely not intermediate, it's for beginners and looks as it was made for grade 3 and under. There should be more funding put towards this skatepark It should be better! It isn't fair that Bowen has two amazing skateparks and we can't make a half decent one. We should get somthing better like Bowen, something with bigger transition around 5 - 7 ft tall with down rails, hips and more obstacles instead of a tiny basic park without any flow.

So great to see something being done here! Well done Council! If I could add to the wish list it will be:
Increase the size of the skate.
2 basketball courts.
Shaded seating areas for families to use while the kids are playing. Stationery exercise equipment.
PLEASE install water bubblers!

It is looking great but would like to see more things added like more things to grind on and even a track around the outside of it. I have seen this in Townsville and it’s a great little added features.

This is so disappointing, my son has been looking forward to seeing the new design and he is left cold. So much so that if this design is taken up he will (and many others) not bother to use it at all. The Airlie Beach and greater area are growing and this design clearly does not cater to local teenagers or visiting families with older children. This proposed skatepark is basic and suits beginner level and young children only. Why can’t Cannonvale/Airlie have a skatepark that is as least as good as either of the 2 great skateparks in Bowen? Whitsunday Council, get back to the drawing board and present the community with a skatepark proposition that will grow this area and attract people to it.

The old design is alright, just needs a bit of love!

The original big end section's good for the older kids, (The ones who ACTUALLY NEED IT)

This will literally just be another toddlers' playground.... SCOOTER CITY!!!

Repair the large bowl section with proper coping & transition.

Make the funbox in the middle smaller.

Put a small bank/quater-pipe along the edge closest to the road & remove that bottom rail.

As for the small, steep mini walls, LEAVE THEM THE WAY THEY ARE!!!

Maybe the last third of the mini walls, you could change the transition into a mini bowl section, as part of the new road-end bank/quarter-pipe

Resurface the floor concrete.

Please don't tear this down for "just other pump track"

Add some more skatepark to the original if you must, but leave the original design as it is!

Please apply for more funding! This design adds nothing to the regional skatepark facilities. Jubilee Pocket already has exactly the same half-pipe and hip combination but with a wider variety of other obstacles. This is far too basic and aimed at young children. Once again the teenagers miss out and I’m driving hours every weekend to take the kids to a decent skatepark and spending money elsewhere. There is nothing in this design to attract people from anywhere else to visit the area or even to drive from Jubilee Pocket as the existing skatepark there is better. Skateboarding and freestyle BMX are now Olympic sports and the talented youths of this area deserve something better to challenge and engage them. Something with some decent transition (6 foot +) and some street obstacles such as down rails, stair sets and hubba’s that can be used to progress the skills of intermediate skaters, BMX riders and scooter riders should be an absolute minimum for this area, especially when you consider the high quality skateparks available at Bowen, Mackay and pretty much every regional town in Queensland. This is not worth building, please apply for more funding so this area can cater to youth and young adults as well as the young children have been catered for.

Tuansand about 3 years ago

At least the old school "horseshoe" park with the bowl section was something for the bigger kids, the original skatepark already attracts 2yr-olds pushing their 3wheeled scooters round.
Anyone half serious is constantly waiting for toddlers to walk around, or flat-out trying to dodge them/occasionally accidently bowling them over because they don't know how to look around...
Because they're toddlers.
This design will be that, on steroids, complete waste of money.

Socksnflipflops about 3 years ago

Need a bigger and more variety in the skate park and also a pump track for the young kids

Max about 3 years ago

It would be great to have a pump track added as well for the younger kids

Please apply for more funding and do it properly!!
That design is basic and won't attract any skating interest or money to the community.
It has the exact same designs from jubilee pocket, just moved around.
It doesn't flow AT ALL, just straight line from one end to the other, with the same "cut & paste" halfpipe/hip from Jube's.
You spent over a million dollars on the giant playground, which caters to 3-10yr-olds...
This design targets the same group of people, please build something that EVERYONE of ALL AGES can use, not just another "PLAYGROUND".
If you want to bring attention to Airlie, build something that experienced skaters want to skate!
If you build it near shops and the water, it will attract skate comps etc, and all of the surrounding shops will benefit too!
A large bowl/ creative transission incorporated into the design will attract big names etc.
A great spot would be on the water at Airlie Beach, would look great on TV and get Airlie noticed!

It would be awesome to have a small bike track added to the stake park for the smaller kids
Similar to the one in Mackay at the “sugar bowl”

Candy J about 3 years ago

Don’t know much about skate parks but it looks good! Turning the unused land adjacent to the road into proper car parks would be nice
