What is biosecurity?

The prevention and response to pests and diseases that threaten Australia's economy and environment.

    Why is biosecurity important?

Biosecurity protects Australia's $32 billion agriculture export industries, as well as protecting our unique flora and fauna, our tourism industries and lifestyle.

What types of pest species are in the Whitsundays?

There are many different types of plants and animals which are considered pests in the Whitsunday region, and which cause damage to our waterways, grazing land and agricultural industries. Some of these include feral pigs and cats, wild dogs, carp and tilapia in the waterways, prickly pear and mimosa. For a full list, view the updated Biosecurity Plan on this page.

    Why is my feedback important?

Biosecurity is an issue which affects everyone in the Whitsundays. It is vital that all residents of the region are aware of these pest species, and understand the pest control measures in place. It is particularly important that landholders and farmers are aware of their pest management responsibilities, and work with Council to control pest species on their properties.

How do I give feedback on the draft Plan?

You are able to give Council feedback by taking the short survey below, leaving your comments in the Guestbook, or contact Council directly on the contact information provided under Who's Listening. You can complete the survey in person at any of our Customer Service Centres.
