Thank you for your interest. Consultation has now concluded.

Did you know... sediment loss from development sites can impact Whitsunday waterways and the Great Barrier Reef?

We all need to do our bit to reduce impacts on the environment. Council has developed an Erosion and Sediment Control Policy and accompanying program to carry out effective strategies and actions, to reduce sediment loss on urban waterways from development sites.

Council has a role both in the regulation of development, and the protection of the Whitsunday region’s natural environment. The draft Policy aims to promote and assist sustainable development while also working with the development industry to reduce impacts on coastal ecosystems.

Under the Queensland Environmental Protection Act (1994) everyone has a duty of care to reduce impacts on the environment. Under Section 440ZG of the Act it is an offence to allow sediment or other contaminants to enter urban stormwater systems.

The draft Policy also informs the community that Council will take sediment loss from building sites seriously.
