Lake Proserpine

Lake Proserpine (also known as the Peter Faust Dam) is one of the Whitsunday Region's most iconic natural assets and is located approximately 30 minutes inland from Proserpine.
Since opening in 2019, the Lake Proserpine campground has welcomed visitors to a revitalised camping area, including waterside bush camping sites, new public toilets and showers, designated fire pits and updated picnic facilities. With easy access to the boat ramp and three new fishing pontoons, your lakeside getaway has never been easier!
Future upgrades are planned at Lake Proserpine in the next few years, including 10 cabins, powered caravan sites, new BBQs and a camp kitchen.

To ensure our facilities at Lake Proserpine remain in top condition, a new kiosk and live-in Site Manager will be set up from July 2021 to maintain and monitor the recreational area.
As of 19 July 2021, visitors can stay for up to seven nights at our lakeside bush camping sites however, a small camping fee will apply. The fees collected will be reinvested back into Lake Proserpine and will cover the costs of employing the Site Manager and managing the operations of the grounds.
Lake Proserpine Master Plan
Council is currently seeking government funding for the next stage of the exciting redevelopment of the Lake Proserpine Recreation Hub. Stage 1 of the Master Plan included the following improvements:
- The refurbishment of existing picnic shelters and BBQs
- New toilet and shower amenities
- 3 pontoon jetties for hand fishing and land access
- Upgrades to existing carparking areas including resurfacing and line marking
- Informal camping areas created
- Installation of new signage, including wayfinding (directions) for visitors
- Construction of a visitor kiosk for the hire and sale of goods and services to the public
- Vehicle washdown bays to prevent the spread of the pest plant/weed Mimosa Pigra
The dam and certain surrounding land are owned and operated by Sunwater Limited. The dam was built to predominantly service agricultural and urban water supply. It also provides flood mitigation effect to the townships of Proserpine, Cannonvale and their surrounding areas.
In mid 2019 Sunwater granted Council a non-exclusive long-term licence. This allows Council to use and occupy allocated Wet and Dry Concession Areas for the delivery of new recreational activities and facilities, for the benefit of the surrounding communities and the regional Whitsunday tourism industry.
Stage 1 is jointly funded by the Commonwealth and Queensland Governments under the Building our Regions program ($1.5M) and Tourism Recovery Fund ($1M).
