Are you a local tourism business and interested in lowering your carbon footprint?

The Whitsunday Climate Change Innovation Hub has been approached by members of the region's tourism sector expressing interest in purchasing local carbon offsets to help the industry reach carbon neutrality.

The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authorities Climate Change Position Statement carries strong messaging that “Climate change is the greatest threat to the Great Barrier Reef. Only the strongest and fastest possible actions to decrease global greenhouse gas emissions will reduce the risks and limit the impacts of climate change on the Reef”.

Carbon mitigation programs are required across all sectors to reach the Paris Agreement target of carbon neutrality by 2050 to which the Australian Government has committed.

A carbon offset or Australian Carbon Credit Unit (ACCU) can be purchased to negate the impacts of unavoidable emissions (such as those from running vehicles or boats) with each ACCU representing one tonne of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO2-e) stored or avoided. A local carbon offset project could have added benefits to the local environment and economy.
