You know as much as the next guy that I love transition, but this is a bit too much for such a small space, can I make some suggestions that only tinker with your current design and make for a better park overall?

Basing off your current legend;

1. add extension or something extra to the quarter
2. Possible remove it as it doesn't flow with the rest of the park the way its intended, I like the concept but being that its right in front of a flat bar and rock gap, its out of place. if anything I'd look at replacing it with a flat ledge the same length as the flat bar?
6, 7 & 8. Not sure why this wheelchair ramp is there, it makes no sense to the overall flow of the park, this could easily be a kicker on each side to ledge?
9. instead of a quarter hip, extend it with hip banks? and have the other side all the way across for flow to and from said hip

The rock gap could be kickered, or instead of the quarter, have china bank for the cut out?

Just needs less transition and some back and forth awareness

Theo here, MC for Australian Skateboarding Community Initiative. This is not my local park, but feel my opinion may be of worth. Feel free to disregard, let the locals decide if my views align with their community.

This park is in upgrade in regard to the quality of build, polished concrete, and probably shape of the ramps. I have skated the current PCYC park, it is a lot of fun, but that centre piece box really could be better shaped. It's nice having so much space on the park, heaps of room for everyone to flow.

The new design is very entry level in the difficulty of elements. Ie, the manny pad, halfpipe, flatbar are all ideal for beginners or those looking to try new tricks. However the progression would be incredibly limited. There are no hips, banks, down rails, ledges, stairs etc. Ample elements are missing from this design.

As all new parks, I am sure this is limited by budget.

I would take a few things into consideration.
When this park is built, will it bring additional revenue into the region? A park this size is not suitable for regional competitions. Investing more into a skatepark can bring large returns to your community via skatepark activation, eg, competitions. Skaters and their families travel for events, often staying for extra days/nights in local accom. While exploring local attractions. It would be a shame to finally demolish and build a new park, only to realize it is unable to facilitate any events to showcase your region or talented skaters.

Clearly from the numerous responses below, your skatepark community would prefer the existing park over the new design. Perhaps holding off a rebuild until additional funding is secured to build a larger facility?

All in all, the new park design looks very fun. For a warm up, or chill session. However with the growing population in QLD, I would expect this park to be EXTREMELY busy, especially with young families. I feel confident to predict this park may lead to more conflicts than good times due to the limited space for multiple users.

Again, this is not my local, and my opinion is for the local skatepark community to validate.

Looks pleasing to the eye and would make a good destination for friends and family to come by. However we need more of an upgrade than that. As a usual goer to the pcyc skatepark, I can say it’s a good park but it is just too small. Especially when a skatepark is a huge attraction towards little kids, it can get a little cramped up. So my recommendation would be to increase the overall size of the park. By doing that we have more room to create a street section as well as improving the bowl section. A street section would consist of ledges, stair sets, rails and more. I think once this all comes together, it will be a great place and people would start travelling up just for the skatepark.

Make the mini ramp a few feet higher (5ft +)A pyramid hip in the corner between 1 & 8 would help heaps for flow and speed and also add another aspect for tricks. The cost impact would be relatively low few extra squares of contrete and some localised earthworks. Also make sure that the rock gap is still traversable and there is access either side of the rail (FS & BS).

Another ledge between 1 and 2 wouldn't go astray either.

I'm really happy to see this being renewed.
My suggestion is to resurface the basketball court with smooth concrete so that it can also be used as a skate rink (similar to Bowen PCYC rink). The bitumen is very damaging in falls!
The carpark is awful but if $$$ are an issue, I'd prefer to have money spent on the activity section rather than the carparking.
I really appreciate that it's almost entirely shaded!

Its good to see things are moving forward. The new design looks OK but does leave a lot to be desired. The skatepark that was built at Alexander headlands on the Sunshine Coast is one of the best I've seen. Something like that would be amazing. Or the one a Cairns is great to. This seems like we have gone a bit cheap on the budget and went for the poverty pack. The changes "ash" talked about are great ideas to. Built something we can be proud of.

Please give more funding for bigger and better ramps, this design is no upgrade and should be taken into consideration on what the people of Whitsundays actually want. I think that the design is not suitable for any advanced skaters. There would be no point building a skatepark that would be nearly exactly like the pcyc skatepark u need a bowl and more transitions roughly 5-7 feet

It really needs to be bigger we need bigger ramps bigger halfpipe and we also need a bowl aswell and the street section better

Upgrading for “trends” isn’t a good enough reason to rebuild something.
I’d prefer to see some of the potholes fixed on the road, but if this is going to go ahead don’t waste money on demolishing the old. Just build a complete new one close to the old, not on top of it.

Im not a skater but this design does not look any better than whats there now, so why do it?? I would recommend surfacing the car park and some lighting.

A brand new skate park will attract a lot of people. The skate park will need to be large enough to accomodate everyone. Ensuring there is enough room for 3yo who just want to have fun and the experienced who tend to be faster and perform tricky manoeuvres which can be dangerous around the inexperienced.
I have driven to Mackay on many occasions just to take my kids to the sugar bowl skate park because it’s amazing

Fantastic news that this is on the cards the park needs upgrading and it is a very popular sport in this town.it needs to be bigger though with plenty of shaded seating and lights.

Looks like a good new space for the younger kids, but it is too small. I would like to see some of the other area in this location used for a more challenging/interesting skate park for older kids and adults to utilise aswell. There is a lot of space there to create a bigger better park. The Sugar bowl in Mackay is something to aim for.

The park looks good but it needs to be a fair bit larger, it won’t allow to be used by many people at once as it is.
It needs shading or more seating area under cover too, it should be an all weather facility with toilets.

The bowen skate park is a great inspiration point.

Hi guys I like the design, I have a few issues with it tho. I really think we need a bigger skatepark for the amount of people that skate/ scooter ride in this town. I would really like to see a bowl in this design and it would attract a lot more people to the town.

So pleased that this space is scheduled for funding. However I agree with many of the comments below. If you are going to do it, then please do it properly and make it larger and suitable for all ages and skill levels. An L-Shape design that sees the vacant land behind the basketball courts used would be incredible if it is feasible. Similar to the Queens Beach skate park in Bowen.
