Whitsunday Bushfire Resilience Project

Whitsunday Regional Council is coordinating the Whitsunday Bushfire Resilience Project that aims to assist the community to become more prepared for bushfires. The Project is funded by Commonwealth Department of Industry, Science, Energy and Resources as part of the Black Summer Bushfire Recovery Program.

The project involves four components:

  • Development of Community Bushfire Plans - See drafts on public consultation for Binbee, Crystalbrook and Whitsunday Paradise.
  • Coordination of Bushfire Training Workshops (completed)
  • Coordinating a FREE service to assist landholders to develop a Property Bushfire Plan
    • Subsidy program of up to $2,000, with a 50:50 contribution between landholder and Council, to assist in the implementation of actions or purchase infrastructure identified in an endorsed Property Bushfire Plan, and
  • The installation of priority community firefighting hydrants and infrastructure.

We encourage you to view our Online Mapping to understand your properties Bushfire risk (select Planning Overlays -> Bushfire Hazard) and view our important links (right) to make a survival plan and learn about the importance of planned burns. Note, to be eligible for a Free Property Bushfire Plan, premises must be affected by over 1ha of High or Very high bushfire hazard.

Have your say on Community Bushfire Plans!

Check out our draft plans and have your say via the survey below, email info@whitsundayrc.qld.gov.au or make a written submission to our Customer Service Centres prior to 27 October 2023. We are holding information stalls at each community in the coming weeks:

  • Whitsunday Paradise – Sunday the 24 of September – 3-5pm – Whitsunday Paradise Foreshore Reserve (Marine Pde).
  • Binbee – Sunday the 8 of October – 3-5pm at Normanby Road – waste skip reserve.
  • Crystalbrook – Sunday the 15 of October – 3-5pm – Camp Kanga
